Everything you (probably) need to know about working with me:
I’m a patient taskmaster. I will give you the brain time you need to collect and create information, provide feedback and approvals, BUT I will also hold your feet to the fire. Projects that drag out are no good for anyone. You start second-guessing yourself. You start using delays as a way to avoid the marketing. You end up spending more money than you need to.
I’m punctual. I hate being late for anything: meetings, picking my kids up from school, paying bills, deadlines. The fact that after almost two decades in my career I still hear people complain about designers and other creatives missing deadlines or acting flaky hurts my heart. I keep hoping as a industry, we’ll move past that negative characterization. There’s just no excuse for that kind of unprofessionalism.
I know small business. If you count my parent’s serial entrepreneurship which has spanned everything from a mini-golf course to wholesale fireworks, you could say I’ve been involved in small business almost my whole life. I know it. I’m good at it. I love it. If you don’t already know and love yours, I can help you get there. Making marketing your business a lot more easy and fun is one way I do that.
I like to laugh. I like to have fun while working hard. Like dance-party-at-my-desk-to-classic-Michael-Jackson kind of fun. To my delight, my clients are all people I truly enjoy talking to and getting to know. (It wasn’t always like this, but I learned how to spot the ill-fits and say ‘no.’) My clients and the colleagues I work closely with are awesome people who are smart, kind, and respectful. It means our work together is pleasant and productive, even while we joke around with each other and in some cases develop good friendships.
I got your back. It’s important to me that you feel comfortable using the words and materials I create for you. I will always offer orientation to new software that we’re using in the course of a project, and develop templates and guides that will help you carry forth. I regularly create trainings and other resources to help people move forward with their messaging and marketing. And I’m always on the lookout for what will serve my clients best, even if that means scaling back my involvement or not using my services at all. My job is to boost your brand voice, not push my own agenda.
I’m a mom, a Star Wars fangirl (since I was a little girl), and an adventurer at heart. Do I understand getting pulled into a million directions while determined to stay the course with vision and goals? Yup. As incredible as my husband is, as amazing as my kids are, I still deal with waves of working mom guilt that threaten to knock the wind out of my sails. But I’ve figured out how to steer my dreams through a sea full of Legos and school homework and failed gardening projects so that most of the time life feels more exhilarating than exasperating. One of my dreams has been to live abroad, and I’m lucky to currently be in Guyana with my family while my husband kicks butt as the director for Guyana Tourism Authority.
