Turning Free Advice Into Paid Work

This question came in from an attendee after a presentation I recently gave (edited for brevity):

“Do you have any pointers or tips on converting volunteer work into potential business ventures or employment? Simply put, I've been volunteering with various spaces in San Francisco, CA and my intention for doing so is ten-fold: community, meeting like-minded people, being a part of something that aligns with my values, networking, and opportunity.

I am curious as to why these opportunities haven't manifested into anything more. Is it about taking initiative and creating opportunities or simply networking with the "right" people? Additionally, do you have any suggestions as to what sort of specific questions or follow up statements that can be used in this sort of scenario?”

I’ve heard some version of this question many times over the years—

how do I turn free help into paid work?

Look, I get this situation, for all the reasons this person stated.

You want to be helpful and generous and you’re keen to support good causes and high-impact organizations.

And also, you’re running a business so it’s perfectly reasonable to expect some of your generosity to evolve into paid gigs.

People who are natural givers, as many who work as service providers are, are particularly prone to slipping into always-helping mode and can easily ignore their boundaries around time and money. (Been there!)

If you find yourself in this predicament, whether intentionally or accidentally, I have free advice for how you can turn YOUR free advice into paid work.
