This Was a Risky Move on My Part

Do you remember when bell bottoms were a thing back in the '70s? Of course you do, even if you weren’t alive then.

Do you remember when they made a brief resurgence in the early 1990s? Indeed they did!

Since this bell bottom blip coincided with my Grateful Dead phase, I was on it.

Here's me circa 1992 trying to rock a pair.

In my younger years, I wasn’t afraid to take risks with fashion or make-up.

Looking back… oh dear.

But then? I was happy to explore my groove.

Maybe that was good training ground to expand my risk-taking comfort zone in the ensuing years.

I mean look at me now blithely sharing a horrifying high school pic!

When you run a business, you take all kinds of risks. So many in fact, you might not recognize some of them as risks because it's just how you operate.

Generally, the longer you’ve been on your business journey, the more your tolerance for risk expands.

Or maybe it's that you get smarter about the risks you take.

Risk and confidence have an inverse relationship; when you're low in one, you see a rise in the other.

Even when you’re pretty comfortable taking risks, you still want to reduce the potential for negative fallout where you can.

You don’t want to do it like this dude:

Here are some ways you can minimize the risks you’re taking in your business:

  • systems to keep things organized and unlost

  • looking at your data so you make better informed decisions

  • knowing your actual numbers for desired revenue, clients/projects, and fees for your services/offerings

  • getting outside guidance to help you evaluate your options and opportunities and to keep you on track and accountable

  • regularly taking care of your mental and physical health

  • matching your marketing strategy to the revenue model you're running

  • shipping stuff sooner and more often so you're working off feedback instead of conjecture

  • running project post-mortems so you know what worked and what didn’t for next time

What kind of risks are you taking in your business?

What is something that once seemed risky but feels less so now?
