Two Ways to Find Your Brand Voice
When you’re creating new content for your work or your business, how do you write so that you sound like you?
And I’m not talking about the stiff, stilted, perfect English grammar you, but the real you. The warm, personable, friendly you that makes your writing feel warm and personal so that people connect with it.
What I’m talking about is finding your Brand Voice.
It’s all about how you infuse personality into your communications, so that your messaging aligns with the kind of experience you want to give your customers and clients.
When someone asks you about your business, are you able to respond and have a conversation with flow and ease? But when you sit down at a blank page or screen, do you struggle and labor over every word?
I want to share a couple techniques for finding your Brand Voice, so that your writing feels just as fun and easy-flowing as a natural conversation.
What I want you to try is voice typing or voice dictation.
Just start talking about whatever it is you’d like to write about. It doesn’t need to capture everything correctly (in fact it probably won’t if you’re using a voice typing tool).
Your goal is to get a visual record of what words come up frequently in your speech and identify phrases that sound like you.
Here are 2 easy ways you can try this:
Use the Voice Typing Tool in a Google Doc.
You may already be familiar with this feature if you’re used to texting with voice commands! To turn on the Voice Typing Tool, follow these instructions and check out the screenshot below:
Navigate to the Tools menu in the upper lefthand corner
Select “Voice Typing”
Click on the microphone and start talking to begin your dictation
To see Google’s tips and tricks on using their voice typing feature, you can access the help menu by clicking the question mark icon, under the microphone
This works for in MS Word, too! If you’d like some more information, watch my Tiny Tutorial on voice typing.
2. Use your phone - use the Voice Memo app on your phone or any voice recording app.
This option is a good way for you to hear and identify your patterns of speech by recording your thoughts and playing them back.
All you have to do is open up any voice recording application and start talking. Then play it back, paying attention to the frequent words that come up when you are speaking freely.
The next time you sit down to work on your content and you’re feeling stuck, give simple but powerful tricks a try, and you’ll see how it easy it can be to infuse your Brand Voice into your copy.
